Our vineyards

A step away from the Garda Lake, in the heart of the moraine hills

The morainic hills of Upper Mantua, where the Bertagna winery is located, opens south, a fan, on the Po Valley, which expands in the direction of the Po river, while north they embrace the southern part of Lake Garda, and it is precisely by looking in this direction that on clear days you can see the mountains, including the unmistakable profile of Monte Baldo. The reliefs of this hilly “arch” have altitudes that rarely exceed 200 meters a.s.l., but this low altitude and the beneficial proximity of the lake, with its mild, almost Mediterranean climate, are enough to keep away the Po valley fog in the winter an the summer heat.

From the administrative point of view, these hills occupy the northern end of the province of Mantua, the city is about 30 kilometers from our winery, which is located in the town of Cavriana, in the locality of Bande. The beautiful village of Cavriana, charming and evocative, with its fortress and Romanesque parish church, borders with Solferino, the town known for the battle fought during the Second War of Indipendence, and with Monzambano, another historical Risorgimento town, and its halmet of Castellaro Lagusello, which is part of the association of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The Bertagna winery extends its vineyards on 13 hectares, partly on the Mantuan morainic hills and partly in the Lugana area, closer to Garda Lake; the height of the reliefs concerned is between 50 and 170 meters a.s.l.

The vineyards, with their position, allow them to be reached by the particular climate and thanks to its influence of obtaining quality grapes from the vines with a wide range of aromas. In addition, they also have the advantage of occupying the best slopes, those that look towards the sun, and, amoung the rows, we can find different varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Corvina, Garganega, Cortese, Trebbiano, Turbiana di Lugana.

The cultivation operations are carried out with all the necessary care. Furthermore, in the Bertagna’s vineyards the plant density is high; this allows to have a limited productions on the single plant, which guarantees excellent grapes even in the most difficult years. The company pratices an integrated and sustainable type of cultivation, with a low environmental impact viticulture selection, which allows on one hand to obtain limited yields of grapes per plant, on the other, thanks to the reduced production, to increase the quality of the already excellent wines, as well as the safeguard of the surrounding ecosystem.
